Majestic View Bed and Breakfast is a three-story home, designed and built by Maria in 1994. Next-door is the cabin, which was added to the property in 2008. Maria states that she and her friends were known as “Homer Spit Rats.” Now, fast-forward to the present: Maria lives on the hillside above Homer in a beautiful home which she designed herself– one with a majestic view of Kachemak Bay, and the daily splendor of sunrise, mountains, glaciers, sunset, and at certain times, the Aurora Borealis. Maria raised four sons, whose father taught them the art of commercial fishing for red salmon in Bristol Bay north of the Aleutian Islands; the boys began this training at age 10. Three adult sons currently continue in the commercial fishing industry, in contract with Trident Seafoods, while the oldest son Peter is now over ten years into a career with the United States Army Special Forces. When the boys were still young, it became necessary to supplement income, and Maria put her talent of “hostessing and hospitality” to work by opening [Majestic View Bed and Breakfast](/index). Over the years, as the boys have become adults and gone off on their own, Maria has been able to devote more and more of her time and attention to building and running a quality bed and breakfast that offers one of the best lodging experiences on the Kenai Peninsula. Having lived in the area since 1983, Maria has a wealth of knowledge on Alaska, and enjoys educating people about the area, telling stories, and helping her guests to attain their dream vacation – whatever that may be. Maria’s breakfasts are “to die for”; when you stay at Majestic View, you don’t get the “continental breakfast,” you get the FULL SPREAD. Her gigantic “Alaskan Pancake” covered with fresh fruit is a guest favorite, as are the stuffed French toast and homemade sourdough pancakes. Breakfast is always an enjoyable time – where you might share a meal and conversation with people from just about anywhere in the world while enjoying the amazing view. Maria has always loved to dance, beginning as a cheerleader at age 8. She has taught dance in the Homer community schools. She was Homer’s first certified Zumba instructor (2010) and has over a dozen certifications including Aqua Zumba, Zumba Gold and Zumba Kids. God, spirituality, family, and the outdoors are her favorite pursuits. Maria began taking care of the elderly in the year 2000 (she loves this and is very gifted), and in 2008, she expanded this service to the downstairs and called it “Majestic View Assisted Living” – housing up to 5 residents at a time, and helping individuals and families care for their loved ones in the latter stages of life, through death. She has been a CNA since 2000, and was administrator of the assisted living – though necessity often found her “working in the trenches.” She is AFFA certified, AEA certified, and AAA certified. Homer is a unique community that offers scores of activities for visitors. Fishing for halibut and salmon is at the top of the list for many guests, and there is fishing to be had in any season. Halibut are available year-round; “Winter Kings” are available in the ocean throughout the year, but the Kings are most often fished in the rivers when they spawn in May and June; Red (Sockeye) Salmon are most numerous and available in July; and the Silver Salmon return to the rivers to spawn in August and September. “Less desirable species” (according to Alaskans) like the Pink and Chum (Dog) Salmon are also readily available during summer, as are numerous species of cod, trout, and rockfish. In the harbor (which is a very cool place to explore in itself), there are numerous charter boats available to take you out fishing. For a more personalized adventure, book a trip with Tim. For the exercise enthusiast, there are scores of hiking opportunities – especially in Kachemak Bay State Park across the bay from Homer. Trail maps are available and will help you to choose the level of difficulty that is appropriate for you. Tim is available to be your “water taxi,” dropping you off and picking you up at your desired time and place. There are also bike rentals and appropriate trails around Homer. Several outfits offer kayak rentals, training, and tours out on the bay. If you’re into culture – Homer offers the Homer Pratt Museum, the Norman Lowell Art Gallery, numerous other art galleries, the Island and Ocean Visitor Center, the Center For Alaska Coastal Studies, and regular art shows. Homer even has an old-fashioned movie theatre where you can catch the latest flicks, and the Pier One Community Theatre down on the spit. Wildlife enthusiasts will love the abounding opportunities to see bird life, moose, bear, mountain goats, and marine mammals like the sea otter, harbor seal, and humpback whale. Adventurers love the opportunities for horseback riding, ATV tours, beach-combing in the wilderness areas, berry picking, or day trips to fly in for brown bear viewing. And the scenery is available all along the way – places like Gull Island, China Poot, the volcanoes (on a clear day), Tutka Bay, Sadie Cove, Little Tutka, snow-capped mountains, forested hillsides, and the beautiful blue/green water. Some guests like staying on land, but also like to explore – and there are places to do that off Skyline Drive, on the Anchor River, the Kasilof River, or the Kenai River. Lands End (at the end of the spit) and Bishop’s Beach are nearby public areas to walk by the ocean and gather seashells, rocks, or whatever treasure may wash up. Getting to know the tides – what is happening, and at what time – is an art in itself… something that all sportsmen and outdoor enthusiasts are keen about. Tide tables are available at Ulmer’s Hardware, The Gear Shed, or several bait and tackle stores out on the spit. Popular destinations across the bay include taking the ferry ride to tour Seldovia – a small wilderness town across the bay – or taking “The Danny J” ferry across to Halibut Cove to tour the small settlement, and have a seafood dinner at The Saltry Restaurant. Downtown Homer and “The Spit” are home to dozens of unique shopping opportunities where you will find local art, artifacts, and gifts that you can’t find anywhere else. If you’re hungry, there are dozens of restaurants in town and down on the spit – where you can find everything from the traditional American burger to the freshest seafood. Did you know: Homer is home to Tom Bodett (Motel 6 advertisements); Lincoln Brewster (contemporary Christian music artist); Jewel (female music artist); the Kilcher Family (from the reality show “Alaska: The Last Frontier”); Deadliest Catch and The Time Bandit (reality show); and The Salty Dawg – the only building on the spit to survive the “Good Friday Earthquake” and subsequent tidal wave of 1964. There is only one road coming into Homer – the Sterling Highway. When traveling to Homer from Anchorage, you will see the tidal mudflats of Turnagain Arm, numerous snow-capped mountains, and river tributaries – including the famous Kenai River. There are lots of small towns along the way. When descending into Homer, the enormous Cook Inlet will be on your right, and you’ll see the famous “Homer Spit” dead ahead, extending 4.5 miles out into Kachemak Bay. Take the Sterling Highway straight into Homer. At the stoplight near McDonalds, take a left on Lake Street. Go up the hill several blocks, to a “T”. Take a right on East End Road and follow this for almost a mile. Take a left on East Hill Road, and go approximately 2.2 miles to Cottonwood Road. Take a right on Cottonwood Road (a gravel road), and proceed to your first right, which is Jane View. After a right on Jane View, go down the hill and turn left on Race Road. Race Road will come to a “Y”, and you want to follow the “[Majestic View Bed and Breakfast](/index)” sign that points left. Please be aware that you cannot follow your GPS to the below address. Race Road is road-blocked in the middle – thus, the need to go to the road above (Cottonwood) and come down that way. It’s a very simple and important step. We always emphasize this, but unfortunately, the guests who don’t pay attention have the most trouble finding us. Remember, don’t turn right on Race Road. Turn right on Cottonwood Road! Majestic View Bed and Breakfast has all of the amenities of a hotel in town but is settled in the serene Alaskan landscape of Homer.
